"This class was incredibly beneficial to my practice. I learned a gamut of skills that will help not only borderline clients but all. Not only that, it was FUN! Everyone was bonded by the end. Swenson is so funny, smart, and open, all qualities I hope to emulate with my clients and in life."

Michele Koury MHC -LP

"Dr. Swenson balances humility, empathy, passion, and a deep understanding of DBT principles, which have proven to be a successful combination. His Intensive DBT workshop provided an opportunity for both novice and seasoned professionals to re-examine their own conceptualization of clinical information and to engage in the use of DBT skills and treatment strategies more consistently and effectively."

"Aside, for being an amazing presenter, Dr. Swenson is an excellent role model for teaching DBT by example as manifested by his ambience and warmth. A true overload of many blended interventions packaged together leaving the group eager for more. Dr. Swenson’ s smooth delivery of such complex intervention was a shining example of everything one can speculate for professional development par excellence. Definitely an iconic experience! Thank you Dr. Swenson & Nachas."

"Dr Swenson possesses a unique ability to present complicated clinical information in an engaging and relevant manner through the inclusion of numerous clinical vignettes and examples and with his masterful teaching style. His background in psychoanalysis further lends a richness to the presentation and demonstrates the possibility of creativity with the conceptualization and treatment while maintaining strict adherence to the core DBT principles."

10-Day Intensive Seminars

For individuals who have some preliminary experience practicing and/or studying DBT and want to engage in a comprehensive training, this workshop takes place in two parts.

In Part 1, lasting 5 days, the entire treatment is presented and demonstrated, including background, theory, principles, research findings, structuring of the treatment, treatment strategies including skills training, and protocols such as the suicide crisis protocol within DBT. After a 4-6 month interval, during which participants complete homework assignments and an exam, they return for Part 2.

Part 2 lasts 5 days and consists of consultation to the participants’ case conceptualizations and treatments, DBT programming and implementation problems, specialized applications (e.g., DBT for substance use disorders, teens and families, etc.), and many opportunities to witness and practice the treatment.

2-4 Day Advanced Intensive Seminars

For individuals who have engaged in the practice of DBT in some setting, who have taken part in a 10-day intensive training or its equivalent, these are specialized intensive workshops designed to help participants take their practice of DBT to the next level. It involves the teaching of a number of topics within DBT—e.g., behavioral chain analysis, case conceptualization and treatment planning, validation, dialectical interventions, treating in-session dysfunctional behaviors, taking skills training to the next level—and is far more experiential than didactic. These have been highly successful trainings, even for DBT therapists with decades of experience.

5-Day Foundational Training

The teaching content for this format is similar to “Part 1” of the 10-day seminar described above, and is followed up by completing homework assignments and an exam, all to be reviewed by a DBT intensive-trained team leader at the individual’s program. It is designed so that new members of DBT programs and teams, having not had a 10-day training, can get up to speed with other team members but without needing to attend all ten days.

1-5 Day Tailored Workshop

These include a variety of formats, ranging from 1-2 day introductory DBT workshops, 1-2 day specialty DBT workshops addressing treatment of substance use disorders, treatment of adolescents and families, or other specialties tailored to the needs and interests of a particular setting or group of participants.

Consultation Regarding Implementation of DBT Programming in any Mental Health Setting or Settings

Armed with 25 years of experience in the implementation of DBT in inpatient, outpatient, day treatment, partial hospital, case management, and residential (group home) settings, and implementing programming across a continuum of care, this involves assessment of current programming (if already in place) and receiving recommendations and concrete help to implement DBT in a system.

Consultation to DBT Consultation Teams

This format is designed to help the team function most skillfully and effectively to help the therapists to deliver DBT.Consultation teams encounter a wide range of stubborn problems that can interfere with the entire treatment program, and this provides an avenue to receive help for it.
